چکیده

It is known that solutions to second order uniformly elliptic and parabolic equations, either in divergence or nondivergence (general) form, are Hölder continuous and satisfy the interior Harnack inequality. We show that even in the one-dimensional case (x ∈ R1), these properties are not preserved for equations of mixed divergence-nondivergence structure: for elliptic equations Di(a 1 ijDju) + a 2 ijDiju = 0, and parabolic equations p∂tu = Di(aijDju), where p = p(t, x) is a bounded strictly positive function. The Hölder continuity and Harnack inequality are known if p does not depend either on t or on x. We essentially use homogenization techniques in our construction.

Boundary-value Problems with Non-local Initial Condition for Parabolic Equations with Parameter

In 2002, J.M.Rassias (Uniqueness of quasi-regular solutions for bi-parabolic elliptic bi-hyperbolic Tricomi problem, Complex Variables, 47 (8) (2002), 707-718) imposed and investigated the biparabolic elliptic bi-hyperbolic mixed type partial differential equation of second order. In the present paper some boundary-value problems with non-local initial condition for model and degenerate parabol...

Existence and Uniqueness of a Classical Solution of Fourier’s First Problem for Nonlinear Parabolic-elliptic Systems

This paper deals with the existence and uniqueness of the classical solution of Fourier’s first problem for a wide class of systems of two weakly coupled quasi-linear second order partial differential functional equations. One equation is of the parabolic type (the degenerated parabolic equation) and the other of the elliptic type (the elliptic equation with a parameter). The functional depende...

The Analysis of Multigrid Algorithms for Nonconforming and Mixed Methods for Second Order Elliptic Problems

In this paper we consider multigrid algorithms for nonconforming and mixed nite element methods for second order elliptic problems on triangular and rectangular nite elements. We prove optimal convergence properties of the W-cycle multigrid algorithm and uniform condition number estimates for the variable V-cycle preconditioner. Lower order terms are treated, so our results also apply to parabo...

The Helically - Reduced Wave Equation as a Symmetric - Positive System

Motivated by the partial differential equations of mixed type that arise in the reduction of the Einstein equations by a helical Killing vector field, we consider a boundary value problem for the helically-reduced wave equation with an arbitrary source in 2+1 dimensional Minkowski spacetime. The reduced equation is a second-order partial differential equation which is elliptic inside a disk and...

Hp-dgfem for Partial Diierential Equations with Nonnegative Characteristic Form

We develop the error analysis for the hp-version of a discontinuous nite element approximation to second-order partial diierential equations with non-negative characteristic form. This class of equations includes classical examples of second-order elliptic and parabolic equations, rst-order hyperbolic equations , as well as equations of mixed type. We establish an a priori error bound for the m...
